Day 26,664 - Images from the I Ching: Lake [The Joyful] over Earth [The Emracing] (Hexagram 58 - Assembling) --> changing towards [line 2] --> Lake [The Joyful] over Water [The Abyss] (Hexagram 42 - Adversity) ... On this so-called "Day of Thanksgiving" (however one interprets the day), it is interesting that the starting image is Lake over Earth, or Joyful Embracing, which is what we may all like to think that this day might be ... Whatever the case, a joyful embrace is something that most would consider a positive experience ... symbolically, the image of Lake of Earth reminds us of the relationship we have with rivers, streams, seas and lakes, that is, the image of gatherings and community ... It is around these bodies of collected Water that we find the foundation for community, family, friendships and social networks, whatever experiences with extended human interactions have been in our lives ... One thing that Nature is good at, and rivers, lakes are seas (in particular) are good at, is following the path of least resistence, allowing their shape, their travel and their destination to be determined by the environment they are in. They may, in the long term, wear down bedrock and mountains to create canyons and plains, but in the short term, they just flow around them, knowing full well that, in the end, their strength is in their yielding and their persistence ... Families, communities and friendships can learn from this ... Efforts to control people and erasing them if they refuse to capitulate only results in resentment and retaliation in the short term and permanent isolation in the long term ... During this time of "gathering" (i.e. Thanksgiving dinners and gathering around the hearth) we should listen to the message being whispered to us by the babbling brook: accept others as they are and respect them being who they are ...

Within the inner Earth of this image, we shift internally to the Abyss of Water, leaving us in the somewhat troubling context of Lake over Water, the image of a Lake being drained of its essence (Water), that is moving into a lower cavity within the earth. This is symbolic of adversity, exhaustion and depression ... This is a reminder of how valuable our community, family and social networks can be, because there are many shifts within our psyche and within the world around us that can leave us in this state ... Within good community and family that respects us (unconditionally) as we are, we will be in a better position to withstand and overcome an environment such as this ... For many of us, we have had difficulty finding or maintining community ... For many of us this is perhaps the greatest challenge, but one that is well worth the effort ... Happy Gathering! ... Il Matto ...
