Day 26,669 - Images from the I Ching: Thunder [The Arousal] over Sky [The Seeking] (Hexagram 04 - Power) --> no changing towards --> ... This image of (outer)Thunder over (inner)Sky is a particularly powerful and positive image ... and it seems to have no desire to move one ... just yet ... When the creative mind, the head, the brain is surrounded by the electric presence of Thunder there is a context ripe for accomplishing much ... All of us have ideas, dreams and great plans, but most of them fall by the wayside as life, the Universe and a shortage of motivation sinks into our lives. But this is Thunder that we find ourselves responding to here ... How many times have we been encouraged by someone, or given an opportunity to do something that we really want to do? This might be a job opportunity, an encounter with an inspirational person or perhaps even the loss of a job ... The Universe unleashes countless paths that can be travelled on any given day ... Our lives unfold often in the wake or serendeptious circumstances that are the by-product of even tiny decisions, but we are so focused on perceived and real obligations, or traditions, or our fears that we don't appreciate the convergence of opportunity, desire and a persistent energy to act out on our long thought of plans ... In this image we have Thunder to motivate us and the Sky to lift us to a new place in which we can fly ... But will we? ... Il Matto ...

Day 26,668 - Images from the I Ching: Lake [The Joyous] over Lake [The Joyous] (Hexagram 10 - Joyfullness) --> changing towards [lines 1,4,5] --> Earth [The Embracing] over Water [The Abyss] (Hexagram 48 - Collective Force) ... In the "body" of the I Ching, Lake is the Mouth ... (Earth:Belly, Thunder:Foot, Sky:Head, Wind:Thighs, Water:Ear, Mountain:Hand) ... In this image, both the inner and outer realities are in the realm of Lake, The Joyous, The Happiness ... As the mouth, as in the human body, we find the center for expression, communitcation, language and all forms of oral creativity ... storytelling ... singing ... poetry ... Everything about this image yearns to be expressed, both within us and in the world around us ... It is a cacophony of sound, expression and desire to be understood ... On the one hand, it is good if we can find our voice and express to others some sense of ourselves ... On the other hand, it is important to remember that the same is true for all other humans and other animals ... The world would be a very silent and haunting place if this complex symphony did not exist ... Even the chuckling of brooks, the roar of waterfalls and the crashing of waves on the sea shore want to contribute to this sound track of our lives ... Our voice, regardless of how we feel about them, have the ability to contribute their own presence ... Even if we can't speak, we can still beat drums, knock sticks together or tap our feet ... There are many mays to share in this vast ensemble and the world, even the Universe, will never be quite the same for ourselves and others around us if we open our mouths, flex our fingers or dance ... The trees sway with the wind ... The rain patters on ponds, sidewalks and boulders ... The nightingale serenades the night ... None of them hesitate to do what comes naturally ... Within the Universe, there is no shortage of examples of ways to fill that empty space betwen ourselves and all of the rest ...

Within this image there are three aging, dying Yang(Seeking) lines in the first, fourth and fifth positions ... These will move the outer Lake to Earth and the inner lake to Water ... Outer Joyfulness to the Embracing Earth ... Inner Joyfulness to the Abyss and Nourishment of Water ...

It is not uncommon to feel depressed, confused and depleted after the exhileration of an enjoyable period ... We don't want such experiences to end ... But the Universe will bring all things to some conclusion just as readily as it will open up new paths for us to travel and explore ... We are never consulted on these things and we are foolish to demand that the Universe give us anything specific ... Desire will only bring confusion and obscure disappointments ... We should be just as receptive to the joy as we are to the difficulties, for they complement each other and serve as the cauldron of our esistence ... The end result of each leg in our journey is a way to more effectively sense the nature of each breath that fills our lungs and each word that escapes our lips as we exhale ... The water that seeps into our collective Earth is shared, consumed to together and cycled through each of our bodies, so feel that life and energy that it brings ... Il Matto ...

Day 26,667 - Images from the I Ching: Thunder [The Arousal] over Mountain [The Unmoving] (Hexagram 52 - Smallness) --> changing towards [line 3] --> Thunder [The Arousal] over Earth [The Embracing] (Hexagram 60 - Repose) ... There is an interesting, calming symmetry to the image of Thunder over Mountain, where the hexagram froms a letter 'H', with Yin(Embracing) lines above(outer) and below(inner) with two Yang(Seeking) lines in the middle. At one level one could say that the Yang(Seeking) lines are "contained" by the Yin(Embracing) lines, which in an of itself mitigates the more proud and aggressive, but creative nature of the Yang elements in this image. This means that the boastful and arrogrant need to be aware of the value inherent in the more introspective and inclusive forces that surround them. These forces need to be respected because they do have the power and ability to quell, mitigate, if not stop entirely, the belligerance that may be present ... The inner Mountain can be a strong, stabilizing force, which can also be protective, something needed when the external forces are unsettling ... If we go too high on the inner mountain without some caution we open ourselves to vulnerabiliites that can be costly, for thunder, lightning and atmospheric distrurbances can well up quickly and violently ... The higher one is on the Moutain the more problematic the fall ...

The one changing line is within the inner Mountain and it takes us to the inner Earth, the belly, the centering ground, the source of life ... This is a natural progression since Mountains are constantly engaged in a slow melting down, an erosion, towards the Earth ... The Mountains end up as silt at the mouths of rivers, as fertile top soil on farmland and as building materials for roads and towns ... The once (and currently) grand mountains will (at some point) be reduced to the essential elements of sustaining the Earth ... So the ultimate place/fate of the powerful, wealthy and arrogant will be assimilation into the chaotic order of the Universe ... Although we often think of collapse, erosion and natural levelling of Mountains as a destructive, cataclysmic phenomenon, we are all depending upon the rubble, dust and nutrients that were once locked up in the massive vaults of ancient Mountains ... Day 26,666 - Images from the I Ching: Lake [The Joyful] over Sky [The Seeking] (Hexagram 02 - Resolution) --> changing towards [lines 1,5] --> Thunder [The Arousal] over Wind [The Gentle] (Hexagram 36 - Endurance) ... The physics of the cycle of water is well known ... Through evaporation the moisture accumulates in the Sky, building up over time, showing itself in the form of clouds that become darker as they become more dense with the weight and density the liquid Lake in the Sky ... The Sky (air) can only absorb this moist burden until the air becomes saturated, _then_ at some point the load must be released and the rain brings this moisture, this life-sustaining substance back to the Earth where it will be absorbed, distributed and dispensed into all forms of life ... The moisture evaporating is invisible, hidden, representing those things that we hide, trying to maintain secret, thinking that we can carry them across time and space without release ... The Universe knows that a buildup of any kind of pressure, tension or weight will need, at some point to be released ... There are many ways that Nature has to relieve these points of stress, such as volcanoes, earthquakes and rain ... That which was hidden becomes exposed ... Regardless of what the reason was for the secrecy, the pressure of maintaining the secret brings release when it is finally brought to light.

Nothing in the Universe just disappears ... It may change shape or state, but it is still there, whether it is liquid, solid or gas ... Each of us exists and has an impact ... That impact, regardless of how insignificant it may seem is real and should never be underestimated ... Even if someone crosses the street to avoid you, pretending that you don't exists, out of sight out of mind, the fact that the evasion moneuver was done is evidence of your existence ... It doesn't matter if others _think_ that you have been rendered invisibile ... The Universe knows ...

There are two old and dying Yang(Seeking) lines in this image that will move broth the inner and outer state of things. The outer Joyous Lake becomes Thunder and the inner Creative Sky becomes Wind ... This is a positive followup to the buildup of clouds in the Sky, for Thunder and Wind will bring about the unveiling of that which is hidden ... The inner spirit/breath and the outer catalyst for action will make something happen, that is guaranteed ... What we don't know is what the result of the revelation or action will be ... Are we prepared for the full range of "change" potential that the Universe can (and will) present? ... There is no formula, but we do have our creative inner spirit in the midst of this catalyst ... Act with the wary determination that is needed to react and follow through with whatever "release" the Universe presents ... Il Matto ...

Day 26,665 - Images from the I Ching: Wind [The Gentle] over Fire [The Clinging] (Hexagram 21 - Family) --> no changing lines ... Today, the day after our time of gathering we encounter Wind over Fire ... Wind expresses the concerns of spirit, community and the sharing of breath ... Community, Spirit and Sharing of breath takes place around the Fire, this time an inner, deep, personal Fire ... This Clinging Fire, the synergistic cohesion of family, community and region occurs in a place of intimacy and stories ... Stories are told with breath and the stories bring to mind the times and circumstances that bind a family and community together ... The sparks from the Fire and the reflected glow of faces lost in the rapture of telling and hearing are the substance of family and community ... This unifying force is witnessed by trees as their branches flow with the external winds and the oxygen exhaled by the trees themselves ... We should thank the trees for both their witness and their shared breath ... We should also thank those who share the Fire, the hearth and even the sun, for we all, together, benefit from the harvest and seasons that follow the sun ...

To push someone away from the fire; to eliminate their shadow from the flickering cinders of the flames; to ignore them as they absorb the air and warmth is the same as putting out the Fire and blocking the Wind ... We can do these things easily enough, but the tragic loss of connection with our collective and individual spiritual flames is a kind of homicide, for we all die in part when even a single breath dissipates into the nightime air ... Always make room for presence of another, for the hearth and the campfire spread their warmth and cinders by the Wind, like the forest spreads its limbs, roots and leaves, touching, dancing, protecting ... Day 26,664 - Images from the I Ching: Lake [The Joyful] over Earth [The Emracing] (Hexagram 58 - Assembling) --> changing towards [line 2] --> Lake [The Joyful] over Water [The Abyss] (Hexagram 42 - Adversity) ... On this so-called "Day of Thanksgiving" (however one interprets the day), it is interesting that the starting image is Lake over Earth, or Joyful Embracing, which is what we may all like to think that this day might be ... Whatever the case, a joyful embrace is something that most would consider a positive experience ... symbolically, the image of Lake of Earth reminds us of the relationship we have with rivers, streams, seas and lakes, that is, the image of gatherings and community ... It is around these bodies of collected Water that we find the foundation for community, family, friendships and social networks, whatever experiences with extended human interactions have been in our lives ... One thing that Nature is good at, and rivers, lakes are seas (in particular) are good at, is following the path of least resistence, allowing their shape, their travel and their destination to be determined by the environment they are in. They may, in the long term, wear down bedrock and mountains to create canyons and plains, but in the short term, they just flow around them, knowing full well that, in the end, their strength is in their yielding and their persistence ... Families, communities and friendships can learn from this ... Efforts to control people and erasing them if they refuse to capitulate only results in resentment and retaliation in the short term and permanent isolation in the long term ... During this time of "gathering" (i.e. Thanksgiving dinners and gathering around the hearth) we should listen to the message being whispered to us by the babbling brook: accept others as they are and respect them being who they are ...

Within the inner Earth of this image, we shift internally to the Abyss of Water, leaving us in the somewhat troubling context of Lake over Water, the image of a Lake being drained of its essence (Water), that is moving into a lower cavity within the earth. This is symbolic of adversity, exhaustion and depression ... This is a reminder of how valuable our community, family and social networks can be, because there are many shifts within our psyche and within the world around us that can leave us in this state ... Within good community and family that respects us (unconditionally) as we are, we will be in a better position to withstand and overcome an environment such as this ... For many of us, we have had difficulty finding or maintining community ... For many of us this is perhaps the greatest challenge, but one that is well worth the effort ... Happy Gathering! ... Day 26,662 - Images from the I Ching: Water [The Abyss] over Thunder [The Arousal] (Hexagram 30 - Difficulty) --> changing towards [line 4] --> Lake [The Joyful] over Thunder [The Arousal] (Hexagram 26 - Following) ... Starting off with Water over Thunder gives us a particularly difficult and confusing scenario ... The powerful and profound electric energy of Thunder eminates from within us, driving us to act out, take some kind of action or engage some opposing force ... The problem is that we are surrounded by the obscure and sinister presence of fog, steam, heavy rains or deep mists ... To act in any assertive, powerful way in this circumstance would seem to be ill-advised ... We all become uncomfortable when we find ourselves in a context of low visibility and hostile environments, especially when we are already agitated or on edge ... As with all elements within the I Ching, there are risky and and potentially destructive results from unwise activity when conditions like this descend upon us. Although the Universe assures that there is no formula for behavior that will prevent uncomfortable or even fatal events in our lifes, we also know that survival within the Universe has more to do with our creative resources, our introspection and our willingness to think before we act (assuming we choose to do that) than any fixed menu of skills ... This is epecitally true during times evoked within this image of Water over Thunder ...

As usual, though, this is not the whole story ... There is one dying (Yin/Embracing) line in the outer Water. This brings the world around us into the realm of the Joyous Lake ...

Lake is the mouth and relates to expression, language and communication ... It is exuberant, strong and persistent, never flagging ... This is like a river, a stream or the wave action of the sea ... Regardless of how much we try to ignore or mitigate the presence of Lake, it will make itself known ... We need the Lakes, Streams, Rivers and Seas of the world. We are dependent upon them and we seek them out for sustenance, inspiration and community, for it is in the proximity of Lake that communities establish and evolve. Lakes, rivers and seas have a profound impact on weather systems, plant and water life and human civilization. In this image of Lake over Thunder we see that the electrical, shocking forces of Thunder are mitigated, absorbed or even controlled by the deep, swirling life of Lake ... When we think we are invincible and potent we must keep in mind that the Universe has ways to drain all of that potential away from us ... It is best to understand where we are and how best to utilize our energy in the context, otherwise we could end up using a lot of energy in useless ways ... Il Matto ...

Day 26,661 - Images from the I Ching: Wind [The Gentle] over Mountain [The Unmoving] (Hexagram 53 - Development) --> changing towards [lines 1,5] --> Mountain [The Unmoving] over Fire [The Clinging] (Hexagram 23 - Elegance) ... The initial image of Wind (or Wood) over(on) the Mountain is one of growth, like a tree that has sprouted on the side of a Mountain, seeking the sun and dancing in the Wind ... It is a beautiful scene and one that anyone beholding it will cherish, and declare it beautiful ... But this is not a lush, green, warm context ... The tree is growing ... It is establishing itself by spreading roots wide and deep ... But this is a place of adversity for a tree as it stands exposed to some of the most harsh elements that the Universe can throw at it ... It _needs_ those roots to grab ahold of the Earth itself and cling to its very existence ... Here, the growth is slow and the Tree must be tenacious and determined to hold its place and substance ... From this place of difficulty we are reminded that the Universe can bestow beauty from even the most challenging of circumstances ... The Trees on the Mountainside have shown us an example of this ...

From the two changing(dying) lines in the the first and fifth positions we find our inner selves and the world around us shifting ... This time the Mountain has shifted to Fire and the Wind as morphed into the Mountain and we see that the perspicacity of the outer Tree upon our inner, stubborn, steadfast Mountain has garnered the beauty of a Mountain glowing within the light of our inner Fire ... It is a beautiful image of grandeur and warmth. It is available to each of us, but only if we let that Fire establish itself and express the warmth and flare that we embody ... Il Matto ...

Day 26,660 - Images from the I Ching: Sky [The Embracing] over Wind [The Gentle] (Hexagram 33 - Temptation) --> changing towards [lines 2,4,5] --> Mountain [The Unmoving] over Mountain [The Unmoving] (Hexagram 55 - Stillness) ... Within the image of Sky over Wind, we find ourselves surrounded by a world in which creativity is seeking a place of expression ... We can be open to this creativity, allowing it to channel through us, infused with our own essence ... This is the nature of art ... It is our personally constructed interpretation of the world around us and our relationship to it, a kind of braiding of ourselves with that which we see ... Through this ensemble of expressive creatiions we allow others to experiience some facet of who we are, and the world at large is somehow synergistically richer for that ... Movement (Wind) catches our attention. It insires us to engage it, comingle with it or study it intensely ... It could be a romantic involvement, a shared business venture or an artistic collaboration ... Others cannot do this for us, nor can we do this for others. It is personal, intimate and can be profound ... Parents must remember this when it comes to their children ... They have to engage the world on their own, just as they themselves did, and continue to do ... Life for all is more enjoyable and potentially more rewarding for it ...

Stucturally, this is an interesting image because all of the lines are Yang(Seeking) elements that tend to impose a pressure to act out in some way ... The fact the the Wind, the strong thighs of the body and the spiritual depth of our innerselves here is so prominent means that this Seeking Yang energy is almost impossible to deter ... The single Yin(Embracing) line in the first position can be overwhelmed, a note to be comewhat cautious ...

The fact that there are three aging, dying Yang(Seeking) lines means that much of this Seeking energy will be dimenishing and refreshed with the Embracing Yang elements of a new image: Mountain over Mountain ... Our inner state and the state of the world around us has shifted dramatically to the more reflective, retrospective and deliberate tendencies of the ageless Mountain ... Perhaps we need to pause for a bit after the intensity of some recent experiences ... Il Matto ...

Day 26,660 - Images from the I Ching: Thunder [The Arousal] over Wind [The Gentle] (Hexagram 36 - Endurance) --> changing towards [lines 2,6] --> Fire [The Clinging] over Mountain [The Unmoving] (Hexagram 51 - Travel) ... In this image we are surrounded by Thunder, the image of arousal, surprise and catalyst for action ... It is quite directly associated with storms and intensity ... In the face of Thunder we can be put on edge, uncomfortable and anxious. It is natural for us to be looking for some action to take to relieve ourselves of the intensity that we may find ourselves in ... However, while the skies are alight with tempestuous atmospherics, inwardly there is the present of Wind, Wood, Spirit and Breath ... Wind likes Thunder, just as Trees and underbrush in the Forest like Rain ... Forests are natural gatherers and preservers of water, warmth and life itself ... They exhale the oxygen that we consume and serve as habitat for countless animals and plants that we depend on ... Thunder and storms outside blend with the spiritual breath within the forest that protects and sustains us ... We can endure much with circumstances that could be held in images such as this ...

Both the inner(lower) Wind and outer(upper) Thunder possess one dying line, bringing the image to Fire(outer, upper) over Mountain(lower, inner) ... A Fire raging on the side of a Mountain consumes the dry brush exposed to wind and sun at a rapid pace, traversing the mountainside quickly ... This is an image of travel, of movement, of shifting across space ... Since we are emerging from Thunder and Wind and Lightning, the moving Fire could be fueled by this time of strength ... When our stomachs are full, or our supplies are sufficient, we may be able to take advantage of an opportunity to move in a direction that we wanted to go but could never bring ourselvee to take the risk ... This could be a layoff or the breakup of a relationship or an unexpected opportunity ... Thunder and Lightning can come and go quickly ... A mountain Fire does not linger ... It is voratious ... At times we also need to be fiercly determined and swift in our reaction to quickly evolving circumstances ... Il Matto ...

Day 26,658 - Images from the I Ching: Mountain [The Unmoving] over Sky [The Seeking] (Hexagram 07 - Energy) --> changing towards [line 1] --> Mountain [The Unmoving] over Wind [The Gentle] (Hexagram 39 - Decay) ... This starting image of Mountain over Sky evokes the setting of a fertile valley surrounded by a ridge of mountains. A valley can provide both nurture and protection ... Mountains can shield the valley from storms and rapid changes in termperature and the valley itself can collect the water from rains and channel it into streams and rivers that bring fresh soils and irrigation for all of the life within the valley. The Sky between the Mountains can be warmer in winter and cooler in summer ... Obviously if humanity has discharged contaminants into that air, the same physics that protect the valley can hold the toxins, keeping them in place and concentrated as the toxins build up ... This is yet another example of how we as human can ignore the lessons of the Universe and turn a positive, supportive and sustaining natural phenomenon and turn it into a cauldron of tragedy ... There is always a price to be paid for ignorance, arrogance and insnensitivity to the world around us and those life forms which whom we share the resources of the Earth ...

There is one young, dying Yang(Seeking) line in this image, and it is at the most core position within the inner(lower) trigram, that of the Inner Sky ... This creative, seeking element that can be so productive as it settles into the valley between mountains is now shifting into the Inner Wind: The Gentle, The Penetrating, The Inspirational ... But this Wind/Wood, the forest, the trees and all of the underbrush that serves as habitat for uncountable species, also follows that cycle of sprouting, life, death and finally decay ... Within the valley, with the accumulated moisture and air there is the mingling of life and death into a tightly woven, symbiotic system that we all depend upon for survival ... The habitat is dependent upon this intimate presence and relationship between life and death and we as humans need to carefully consider how we impact the delicate balance between habitate, life, death and sustainable co-existence, for we are just one of many species occupying this valley into which we were born and everything we do in this valley has an impact, negative or positive, on all other life within the valley. If we change the course of rivers, destroy the diversity of life, or expose the earth to harsh industries and farming strategies we can very easily make the valley uninhabitable by even humanity ... Ultimately, the Universe will have the last word on this, regardless of how destructive we become, for when we as a species are long gone and our cities and technologies have crumbled into the earth, there will be a blade of grass or a cockroach or a silverfish that will venture out from the cracks forming in the ruins we have left behind and the process of life, natural life, will start all over again and the valley nestled between the Mountains will become fertile from the decay of what had passed before ... Day 26,658 - Images from the I Ching: Thunder [The Arousal] over Fire [The Clinging] (Hexagram 20 - Abundance) --> changing towards [lines 3,4,5] --> Earth [The Embracing] over lake [The Joyous] (Hexagram 16 - Approach) ... The initial image of outer Thunder over inner Fire is one of action (Thunder) with clarity (Fire) ... Everything about Thunder is related to intensity, activity, tension, anxiety and initiation ... guns have triggers, bombs have fuses, storms have thunder and lightning ... It is no wonder that anger is triggered, that hot-headed people are referred to as having a short fuse, that some people are called "stormy" and "tempestuous". Often this is seen as a negative quality, primarily because these examples are associated with actions taken without clarity or purpose and methodology ... All too often these anger/jealousy/humiliation/revenge-inspired actions are careless, poorly thought out and achieve little more than destruction, sadness or more anger "triggered" by retaliation ... In this image, we are seeing a catalyst that moves forward a well thought out idea that was developed with clarity ... This is a constructive and productive process ... All good ideas need a catalyst ... An idea without a catalyst will simply whither away like grapes on a vine during a drought ... The Universe has evolved miriad catalysts that serve to trigger the countless activities of physics and life, from the nuclear fussion found in stars to the driving rains of a spring storm ... We are surrounded by and infused with the energies of the electro-magnetic spectrum, solar energy, steam energy, volcanic eruptions, floods, earthquakes, cell fertilization, plant germination and the consumption of all manner of life, called food, by all manner of life ... With humanity, though, if we are open to the lessons found in the Universe, we can blend the many forms of energy in the Universe with the clarity of wisdom, logic and creativity ... And from this we can be constructive, productive and helpful ... but ... as with all that is found in the Universe, there are dark, sinister and destructive elements found within this fusion ...

Imbedded within this image sequence are three old and dying lines in the second, third and fourth positions that will move the inner Fire to the Joyous Lake and the outer Thunder to the Earth ...

This image of Earth over Lake is readily associated with Spring, since it brings to mind an underground stream that breaks the surface of the Earth, resulting in one of the most beautiful, powerful and constructive "triggers" present within the Universe, the gushing, gurgling, babbling brook, a mountain spring or a desert oasis ... In one form or another we are all dependent, indirectly or directly on such gifts from the belly of the Creation found within the Earth ... Il Matto ...

Day 26,656 - Images from the I Ching: Lake [The Joyful] over Wind [The Penetrating] (Hexagram 34 - Excess) ... When a Tree(Wind) sprouts beneath the surface of a pond on the edge of a Lake it finds its growth impeded, challenged and threathened because of an excess of water ... We also are under stress when we are dropped into the middle of a Lake of responsibilities, work tasks or tragic events ... We may have many ideas and aspirations ... We may have well laid out plans and perhaps even a wealth of resources to work from, but all of us are vulnerable when we are suffocating beneath a sea of mounting expectations from many directions ... It is important during times like this to learn from the trees themselvs, like the willows and the cyprus trees that sprout and grow in such adverse, wet environments ... If there are aspects of our personalities and lives that thrive in a marsh or swamp then we need to find ways to use those skills and capabilities ... We often don't have the choice of where we live or what the world around us expects ... It may be overwhelming, stressful and painful ... But it is the Nature of life in the Universe to adapt and thrive, even if the growth is slow, tedious and even treacherous ... Draining a swamp or irrigating a desert has unintended consequences, but adaptaiton results in strength and new potential ... Il Matto ...

No changing lines

Day 26,655 - Images from the I Ching: Fire [The Clinging] over Water [The Abyss] (Hexagram 43 - Incompleteness) --> no changing lines ... There is a statment that we hear people make that usually is some variant of "everything seems to be 'off'" ... This image of Fire over Water reflects that sentiment ... Each of the six lines of the Hexagram are in their opposite natural position: the Yin(Embracing) lines are in the odd positions (1,3,5) and the Yang(Seeking) lines are in the even positions (2,4,6) ... They are in balance, but they are all "off" ... The image itself, of outer Crative, Clinging Fire is being aggressively fought off by an increasing, rising flood of the Abyss, the dangerous (yet nurtering) water ... Water quenches Fire ... The Abyss consumes Creativity, introduces obscurity upon our visual field ranges and deadens the clarity of our visions ... In short, that which is most creative and provoking can struggle within this inner liquid turmoil ... In addition, the Universe is not going to arrive quickly to disburse the fog, for there are no changing lines within this image ... All of the lines are young, strong and vibrant, capable of exerting their most confusing, balanced spell ... Is this a lost cause? ... Should we simply curl up into a fetal position and wait for the Mountain to push away the clouds, the Lake bring joy, the Earth to Embrace us? ... NO! ... As confusing and difficult as a sign like this can be, it must be remembered that Fire is Warmth, Clarity and Vision ... These are elements that we can draw on even when the nagging doubts and depression are assailing us ... Just because the Abyss is strong does not mean that the Fire is out, but we do need to focus on it and allow it to infuse us with that clarifying energy ... Il Matto ...

Day 26,655 - Images from the I Ching: Wind [The Penetrating] over Sky [The Seeking] (Hexagram 61 - Contemplation) --> No changing lines ... Our inner Sky is strong within us in this image ... Thinking, creativity, ideas and curiosity are strong components within Sky, so we may be driven to explore, perhaps without purpose, at this time ... However, this inner Creative Sky is surrounded by an atmosphere of spirit, inspiration and penetrating connection with the mysteries of the Universe ... It is from this image that we can see the nature of Divination, which is an intriguing blend of logic and the mystical ... Divination is a way of bringing order to the apparent chaos of the Universe ... It yields images such as found in the I Ching, Tarot, Ifà and the icons that evolve within formal religions such as Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Mormonism, Hinduism, Buddhism and other spiritual/religious/philosophical contexts ... We, as a species are hardwired for Divination and visualization, so much so that it is almost impossible for us to conduct any exploration without some kind of ordered symbolic mapping of our perceptions of the Universe. Religions with sacred texts (Hebrews/Jews, Zorastrians,Christians, etc) will randomly open their sacred texts and obtain inspiration from the synchronicities found in the drawn texts. We all find inspiration from Nature and see patterns that communicate with our subconscious selves ...

This is an image with no changing lines ... They are all young, strong and thriving within and around us ... It may be helpful and fulfilling for us to find some high place exposed to the Sky and Wind, where the openness of the Universe and spiritual energy of the Wind can mingle with our breath. A grove of trees may also instill this contemplative atmosphere ... Il Matto ...

Day 26,654 - Images from the I Ching: Mountain [The Unmoving] over Mountain [The Unmoving] (Hexagram 55 - Stillness) --> changing towards [lines 4,5,6] --> Lake [The Expressive] over Mountain [The Unmoving] (Hexagram 50 - Attraction) ... Mountain over Mountain can be either a stabilizing force, helping us to survive chaotic times by resisting powerful, authoritarian forces ... or ... it can be an obstacle preventing us from getting somewhere we want to go to, or need to get to ... If it is an obstacle, it is useless to engage the Mountain in battle, whether it is our internal Mountain or the Mountains that surround us ... but ... patiently looking for the passageway that could lead us over, around or through the Mountain could be most rewarding ... If the Mountain is fending off powerful forces, keeping them at bay, potentially for years, we must remember to acknowledge the role that the Mountain is playing in our safety and we must accept the assistence with humility ... This is because the forces determined to destroy us will most likely be there to greet us if we ever stray away from the protection of the Mountain ... It is perfectly alright to seek refuge in the Mountain and meditate on the high cliffs ... but ... ultimately, the rest of the world awaits us and we will have to come down at some point, so use the time in the Mountain wisely and prepare for the descent ...

All three of the lines in the upper, outer Trigram are dying ...

This much change in the world around us (from the upper, outer Trigram) could mean that we will see great change taking place in the family, the city were we live or the country we call home. Even if the changes don't affect us directly we should be sensitive to the needs and vulnerabilites of those who are affected by these changes ... The changes taking place will move this outer Mountain towards the Expressive Lake ... When the inner Mountain is surrounded by the outer Lake, it finds itself being worn down, softening up, becoming familiar with an attractive force ... This is a context for affection, feelings and intimacy, for these are personal experiences that can only take place when we have opened up to others. This opening up and dissolving or our protective shells that have built up in life does present an uncomfortable double-edge sword, one in which we can develop deep, abiding and rich friendships. But it can also result in life altering, traumatic abuses ... It is important to proceed with cautious optimism when the Protective Mountain is being worn down by the glaciers (Lake) melting on the slopes of the Moutain ... Il Matto ...

Day 26,653 - Images from the I Ching: Lake [The Joyous] over Earth [The Embracing] (Hexagram 58 - Assembling) --> changing towards [lines 4,5] --> Earth [The Embracing] over Earth [The Embracing] (Hexagram 64 - Nature) ... Once again we encounter a sequence that finishes with the centering presence of the Earth ... This time the images begin with the external Joyous Lake, that expressive component of our existence: our language, our emotions, our strong desire to communicate, to try and make ourselves understood ... The Italians have an interesting way of saying this, "Fammi capire", which literally means "make me understand". Our Lake, that Lake which swirls restlessly within us, by its very nature drives us to at least try to be understood, whether or not we are effective at doing that ... This is where the inner Earth that is shown within this initial image can help ... The Earth centers us, gives us that solid foundation from which to speak, but in this case, the Lake is surrounding us and we could be overwhelmed with a cacophony of voices trying to convince us that each of them needs to be understood by us. Earth, though ... our inner Earth ... can help us to not try and react to each and every one of those voices vying for our attention, but rather to let the inner terrain or our inner Earth channel those voices into places where they can fall on fertile ground and grow, nourishing both us and those around us ...

Two Yang(Seeking) lines are dying in this image. They give rise to young Yin(Embracing) lines, which will move the outer Lake to the Earth ... so, allowing our inner earth to calmly channel the miriad voices around us can lead to substantive resolution to the complexity and confusion that inundates us ... Day 26,652 - Images from the I Ching: Mountain [The Unmoving] over Mountain [The Unmoving] (Hexagram 55 - Stillness) --> changing towards [lines 3,6] --> Earth [The Embracing] over Earth [The Embracing] (Hexagram 64 - Nature) ... Twin Mountains have appeared, one within us and one surrounding us ... With the presence of Mountain comes a strong sense of self that can resist the pressure of others, society at large and even history, for it contains a large measure of the history it has witnessed ... The substance and persistence of Mountain can be either solid, ancoring force that helps us proceed in spite of adversity, or it can be an obstacle that limits our progress, our capacity or our mobility ... We need to first understand what Mountain means to us right now ... Perhaps we need to find a safe, isolated ledge for meditation, or a passageway around, through or over the Moutain ... It may be protecting us from forces that are dangerous for us ... Whatever the case, we can learn from this companion of the ages, for it has seen it all ... We need to listen ...

There are two aging Yang(Seeking) lines that will die and bring into the image two new, young, powerful Yin(Embracing) lines ... The Result is Earth over Earth ... This is the end of the Heaxagram Sequence, potentially the culmination of a journey or life experience that has carried us through potentially harrowing passages of the inner and outer ranges of Mountains in which we find ourselves ... Although the earth can be a centering force, and is the substance of creation, it has many forms: deserts, valleys, caverns, plains, hills. None of us are the same and we are all centered, comforted and sustained by different terrains ... The Earth can provide any places that can present a path for us, even if it is unfamiliar, perhaps even harsh and perilous, but the paths we need can be awaiting us in the next valley, nestled within a complex cavern or winding its way through green fields ... Whether we are looking for adventure or not, it seeks us ... Il Matto ...

no changing lines

Day 26,651 - Images from the I Ching: Fire [The Clinging] over Earth [The Embracing] (Hexagram 59 - Progress) --> no changing lines ... The sun is high in the Sky, warming the Earth, upon which plants and animals coexist within a complex system of synergistic life forces ... Without the Sun, Earth would just be an another cold rock in the Universe ... Without the Earth, there would be no substance ... When the Sun shines, without the obscure presence of Water in the Sky, the Universe provides a window of opportunity ... This may be a time of clarity for us. It could be that some confusion we have experienced will dissipate and a path upon the Earth will be clearly marked ... When this happens, we don't want to be caught languishing in self-doubt ... Opportunities, just like obstacles, will always be present ... And in the changing nature of the Universe, either one could become the other ... instantly ... Another potentially positive element within this image is the fact that there are no changing lines ... All of the Yin(Embracing) and Yang(Seeking) lines are young, strong and vibrant, just like the Sun, which spreads its warmth and clarity from horizon to horizon in this image ... A vision or dream may also present itself ... Be attentive! ... Il Matto ...

Day 26,649 - Images from the I Ching: Fire [The Clinging] over Lake [The Joyful] (Hexagram 11 - Diversity) --> changing towards [line 1] --> Fire [The Clinging] over Water [The Abyss] (Hexagram 43 - Incompletion) ... Starting off with Sun(Fire) over lake, the first glance is beautiful: sunlight glinting off the surface of a lake ... Bright flecks dashing into nearby woods and the dancing of miriad sparks on the anxious surface of dark water ... But this compelling setting is also one of fragmentation, discomfort and diversity of effects ... The sunlight is splintered into uncountable shards as sharp as dried fish bones ... There is a pattern of noncompliance, distraction and opposing forces within the Lake, beneath the Sun and all that come in contact with the these two entities ... Neither the Lake or the Sun can be ignored, nor can the two be reconciled ... The Sun is warm energy sustaining the Earth's life from above. The Lake is a cold, deep creature that absorbs the warmth of the sun and reflects the light while nourishing the Earth's life from below ... Both are needed and both have dangers to be respected ... The Lake swarms with movement within its currents, it's species of fowl, fish, amphibians, moss and reeds ... Stillness seems to be impossible there ... The sun, on the other hand, seems to be evident only in reflection off of the world of substance ... This range of existence is witness to the diversity of the Universe ...

There is one Yang(Seeking) line dying within this Hexagram, in the first position ... It will give birth to a new Yin(Embracing) line, moving the inner Lake, with its cold, challenging depths into the even more ominous depths of the Water's Abyss ... Water is the most difficult of the primary images (Earth, Thunder, Fire, Lake, Sky, Wind, Water, Mountain) because it forces us to deal with our most profound, obscure and confusing characteristics ... With all of the lines in the Hexagram occupying their opposite, natural positions, this is a particularly uncentering image, one that calls for the utmost of vigilance ... When we are uncentered (like in the midst of an interview for a job or being evaluated for our performance) we are at our most vulnerable ... This period of uncertainty and conofusion seems to be most strongly present just before the completion of some process (project, trip, therapy, etc) ... Just remember that, despite the difficulty that can arise from this juxtaposition of Sun over Water (Fire over Water), both of these fundamental elements of the Universe are also keys to our survival, our sustenance and our substance ... Fu Hsi 21: Family, Household
-------- Wind (Spirit, Breath, Wood, Trees, Forest)

Fu Hsi 49: Retreat, Withdrawl, Yielding
-------- Sky (Stars, Planets, Birds)
-------- Head
-------- The Seeking, The Creative, The Strength

-------- Mountain (Boulder, Building, Wall, Tower, Cliff)
--- --- Hand
--- --- The Unmoving, The Ripose

Day 26,648 - Images from the I Ching: Wind [The Gentle] over Fire [The Clinging] (Hexagram 21 - Family) --> changing towards [lines 1,4] --> Sky [The Seeking] over Mountain [The the Unmoving] (Hexagram 49 - Retreat) ... The essence of our collective being and existence is most powerful in the presence of the hearth, the campfire and the cooking stove ... Fire clings to us and maintains us if we are not abusive and careless ... This internal Fire is fueled by the Spiritual atmosphere that surrounds us and the trees that tower above us ... Families and communities help to keep the flames of our desires, hopes and spirits intensely active ... We need this combination of Wind and Fire ... Everything about us is constructed upon the foundations of this common warmth and energy ...

There are two dying lines in these images, both in the first positions of our inner selves and the world around us ... Wind takes on the role of the Creative Sky and Fire expands into the massive presence of the inner Mountain ... This is an image of our inner self standing its ground, insuring that any steps taken are well thought out and feasible ... There is no hurry to act here ... The inspiration of the original outer spiritual Wind expands into the Creative Seeking force of Sky ... Without some moderating force this Creative energy could plough into untested territory, perhaps taking steps that we are just not ready for ... But the Mountain within us says to "Back Off!" ... We need the ancient patience and steadfastness of the Mountain to inject the needed wisdom ... Although our inner Mountain can impede us at times, making it difficult to act in a timely fashion, there are times when that moment of reflection is more valuable than the ensuing act itself ...
